How to Use the Upsell Feature

A guide on the Upsell feature

The Upsell feature in orderBilly helps you increase order value by automatically suggesting relevant products based on what customers add to their basket.

You can create two different types of upsell rules:

  • Basket → replaces the original product with a larger or more suitable alternative

  • Extra → adds or recommends an additional product that pairs well with the original product

What Is the Difference Between Basket and Extra?

Basket Upsell

A Basket upsell replaces the original product with another product.

This is commonly used for:

  • Converting multiple glasses of wine into a bottle

  • Replacing a small portion with a larger one

  • Upgrading menu items

Example

If a customer adds:

  • 3–6 glasses of house wine

You can suggest:

  • 1 bottle of house wine instead

For wine-by-the-glass upsells, we recommend setting a maximum source product amount of 6 or 7 glasses.

Extra Upsell

An Extra upsell suggests an additional product that complements the current order.

This is commonly used for:

  • Sharing plates

  • Side dishes

  • Sauces

  • Desserts

  • Add-ons

Example

If a customer orders:

  • A glass of rosé wine

You can suggest:

  • A sharing plate

  • Olives

  • Cheese platter

The original product remains in the basket, and the suggested product is added separately.

How to Create an Upsell Rule

1. Open the Upsell Settings

Go to:

2. Enter the Rule Information

Fill in:

  • Name → Upsell title

  • Description → explanation of the upsell

Example:

  • Name: Sweet

  • Description: Wil je een dessert?

3. Choose the Upsell Type

Select one of the two options:

Basket

Use this when you want to replace products with another product.

Example:

  • 3 glasses of wine → 1 bottle of wine

Extra

Use this when you want to suggest an additional item.

Example:

  • Rosé wine → sharing platter

Configure the Upsell Rule

Source Product (Trigger)

Select the products that will trigger the upsell.

Examples:

  • Wine by the glass

  • Burgers

  • Cocktails

Suggested Product

Select the product customers should see as the recommendation.

Examples:

  • Bottle of wine

  • Fries

  • Dessert

  • Sharing plate

Minimum Source Product Amount

Defines how many trigger products must be added before the upsell appears.

Example:

  • Minimum = 3

  • The upsell appears when 3 glasses of wine are added

Maximum Source Product Amount

Defines the maximum quantity for which the upsell remains active.

Example:

  • Maximum = 6

  • The upsell is shown between 3 and 6 glasses

Suggested Product Amount

Defines how many suggested products are added or recommended.

Example:

  • 1 bottle of wine

  • 1 sharing plate

Example: Basket Upsell

Goal: Replace multiple glasses of wine with a bottle.

Settings:

  • Type: Basket

  • Source product: House wine by the glass

  • Minimum amount: 3

  • Maximum amount: 6

  • Suggested product: House wine bottle

  • Suggested amount: 1

Result:
When a customer adds between 3 and 6 glasses of wine, orderBilly suggests replacing them with 1 bottle.

Example: Extra Upsell

Goal: Suggest a sharing plate with rosé wine.

Settings:

  • Type: Extra

  • Source product: Rosé wine

  • Minimum amount: 1

  • Suggested product: Sharing plate

  • Suggested amount: 1

Result:
When a customer orders rosé wine, orderBilly suggests adding a sharing plate to the order.

Use Upsells for Specific Menus

You can optionally limit upsell rules to specific menus only.

Enable:

  • Use these upsell only for specific menus

Then select the menus where the rule should apply.

This is useful when:

  • Lunch and dinner menus differ

  • Certain promotions are only active at specific times

  • Wine pairings are only available on selected menus

Tips for Better Upselling

  • Keep recommendations relevant

  • Use Basket upsells for upgrades and replacements

  • Use Extra upsells for sides, sharing plates, and add-ons

  • Avoid showing too many upsells at once

  • Test different combinations to see what works best for your customers
