Using the backoffice on a tablet as an app (Add to Home Screen)

Customers sometimes ask if there is a dedicated mobile or tablet app for the orderBilly backoffice that they can install, for example to quickly manage their kiosk menu. There currently is no separate native app for this.

The recommended workaround, which works perfectly in practice, is to open the backoffice in the browser on the tablet and use the "Add to Home Screen" feature from the browser. This creates an icon on the home screen that opens the backoffice like its own dedicated app, going straight to the relevant page, without the visual clutter of a full browser window (no address bar, no tabs, etc.).

Why this works well:

It is technically still the browser running underneath, but visually and functionally it behaves like an installed app (this is sometimes referred to as a "web app" or PWA-style shortcut). This makes it especially convenient for staff who need to quickly toggle products on or off in the kiosk menu, without going through the full browser interface every time.

How to set it up:

On Chrome (Android):

  1. Open the backoffice page you want quick access to.

  2. Tap the menu icon (three dots, top right).

  3. Select "Add to Home screen."

  4. Confirm the name and tap "Add."

  5. An icon now appears on the home screen that opens directly to that page.

On Safari (iOS/iPadOS):

  1. Open the backoffice page you want quick access to.

  2. Tap the share icon (square with an arrow pointing up).

  3. Scroll down and select "Add to Home Screen."

  4. Confirm the name and tap "Add."

  5. An icon now appears on the home screen that opens directly to that page.

Benefits:

  • Quick, one-tap access from the home screen

  • Opens directly to the desired backoffice page

  • No browser UI (address bar, tabs) cluttering the screen

  • Feels like a native app, ideal for repetitive tasks like toggling kiosk menu items

Note:
Since this is still the browser under the hood, the user must stay logged in to the backoffice (or have a session/cookie that persists) for this shortcut to work smoothly without requiring a login each time. If the tablet logs the user out automatically, this should be checked separately.
